Website Checklist

  1. Determine whether you are eligible to request a unc.edu domain.
  2. Request domain through ITS services.
  3. Once approved, put in a Service Request ticket (select: Request this Service) and be sure to mention that you want the UNC Modular theme.
  4. Sign up for one of the Digital Accessibility Training sessions to ensure compliance with UNC’s Digital Accessibility Policy.
  5. Review UNC Branding and Identity guidelines.
  6. Review the UNC Logo Sheet to determine if you are adhering to the Trademark and Licensing guidelines.
  7. Once ITS provides a link to your site, make sure that the Reading settings are set as follows to prevent your site from being discovered while you are still working on it:
    • In dashboard, click on Reading.
      • Look for Site Visibility and select Discourage search engines from indexing this site.
      • Also select Visitors must have an onyen.
    • If others will be accessing the site, make sure you add them as users by doing the following:
      • In dashboard, select Users and then Add UNC user.
      • You will be instructed to provide their onyen, as well as to identify their role. (Admin, editor, etc.)
      • An email will automatically be generated and sent to the new user, but it’s a good idea to let them know, too.
  8. Gather content and create a rough outline of your content and select modules.
  9. Create website!
    • Read about creating a header and menu.
    • Peruse this site and select modules appropriate for the content you want to share.
    • Images must be legally shareable. Do not take images from the internet unless you have explicit permission to do so.
    • Many images available on UNC Photoshelter
    • Your department may also have an account with Shutterstock or another online image service.
    • For hero images (title images), it is best to seek a horizontally aligned image. The dimension of the photo should be 1200x 675.
  10. When your site is ready, make sure that you request a site crawl with Siteimprove through the Digital Accessibility Office.
  11. Alert UNC ITS that your site is ready to go live.
  12. When you get the thumb’s up, change the site visibility to allow search engines to index the site. (Settings>Reading>Site Visibility)
