Header and Menu

Header

  • From Dashboard, select Appearance>Header>Click Add New Image where you see the Old Well logo. You may also add your departmental logo, as long as the official Carolina logo is somewhere on the site header or footer.
  • If you are adding a logo, you must first upload it to the media gallery. Then, on the header page, select add new image and select your header image from the media gallery. It is ideal for your header to be 1096 x 301 pixels.
  • As with any time you add an image, make sure you add alternative text for accessibility. For the UNC at Chapel Hill logo of the Old Well, the alt text, “University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill logo” is appropriate.
  • Make sure you hit the PUBLISH button to save.

Header, or Primary Menu

  • From dashboard, select Appearance>Menu
  • Under Menu structure, give your menu a name. I typically choose Primary Menu or Header menu.
  • Under Add menu items you will see the following categories:
    • Pages
    • Posts
    • Custom Links
    • Categories
    • Discover Themes
  • Any pages or posts you have added to the site will be located there. Hit the carrot drop-down to see them all, or you may search by title.
  • I do not recommend that you use menu tab for a post, a category or a Discover theme. These are more suitable for a website like unc.edu or The Well that has a lot of new content each day.
  • Simply check each page that you want to use as a menu tab.
  • If you want to link users to an external site, you may utilize the Custom Link category to do so.
    • Enter the url in the URL field.
    • Enter the menu tab to be displayed in the Link Text field.
  • It is generally best to keep your menu tabs to 4, and make sure the titles are not too lengthy. If you choose to display your departmental logo and UNC logo in the header, space will be especially tight.
  • If you want to have a drop down menu, follow the same procedure, however create a blank title page for the actual header tab that is displayed. Here is an example. I want to have a tab called PETS, and in the drop down menu, I will have a page for DOGS, CATS, BIRDS and RABBITS. I will create a page titled Pets, for the purpose of the menu, but it will have no content. I will add the DOGS, CATS, etc. pages to the menu and then drag them under the PETS tab and pull to the right.
    • PETS-menu tab visible in header
      • DOGS-visible in drop down menu
      • CATS-visible in drop down menu
      • BIRDS-visible in drop down menu
      • RABBITS-visible in drop down menu
  • All menu items may be rearranged easily by dragging.
  • When you have your menu set, don’t forget to hit save menu.
